A general guideline for skill level:
- Beginner: never worked with royal icing before (even if you're an experienced baker) or a handful of times
- Advanced Beginner: has worked with royal icing for +/- 6 months and sometimes gets the icing consistency right
- Intermediate: has worked with royal icing for 1 year+ and often gets the icing consistency right

All of my cookie decorating classes include the same cookie and icing prep regardless of the skill level. It was evident that every question was added to make the manual continue to get better. There were MANY times I’d read something and think, “OK… but what it I only have salted butter”?… and BAM! Within a few paragraphs, I’d see, “And, if you only have salted butter, then do this”! It was like she was reading my mind!!!
I also thought the automatic links were awesome bc you could see a visual of what she was explaining.
The grocery list was super helpful and the timeline to prepare you before “cookie frosting day” was a must!
The “how to save money section helped me weigh out what was worth the money and what I might buy later if I truly enjoyed the first experience.
As if that’s not enough praise, the cookies taste “AAAAAAWE-MAZING!!!
(I didn’t try the lemon frosting I my first batch, but plan to on my next one!)
After doing the entire process, my won piece of advice to someone making these for the first time is “Be Patient”! For instance, the beans on the plate were created by making a layer of lines that DO NOT TOUCH, then working on another cookie until I was certain the first layer was dry enough that they wouldn’t glom together and then going back to make more beans… it took three different times to layer the beans.
Like I said, “Worth Every Cent”!
My two daughters (ages 6 and 9) and me decided to do this together and it went so smoothly! It was our second class and first time using piping consistency. I am impressed at how simple Grace makes the process and how fun it is to create a Thanksgiving feast!
This is a great class! Grace goes through EVERYTHING you need to know.
I wasn’t sure *why* I wanted to make Thanksgiving dinner themed cookies, but it’s that time of year and I wanted an immersive arts and crafts project, so I decided to give this class a try.
As a fiber artist, I think of Grace’s classes as “cookie patterns” where I learn techniques as well as receive instructions for how to make a specific end result. This class absolutely fulfilled the brief. There were many different colors and consistencies, but just ten bags of icing and most of them are not leaky flood consistency, so they aren’t hard to keep track of on the work table. Did I get all of my consistencies perfectly matched to Grace’s? No, I did not. Did it work out anyway? Yes it did!
Sometimes I work a class making one of each cookie and then go back and use the rest of the baked cookies to make more without the video running. On this one I did two at a time because you cut the piping bag tips larger as you go, so make a plan. The more cookies you do at a time, the longer the class will take.
The piping consistencies will really stress your piping bags for the pressure piping so don’t cheap out. Leave a lot of time to do these cookies, the results are worth it, but I sure don’t pipe as fast as Grace on my first time making the designs.
I love all of graces classes! I learn so many techniques and in this one the new technique I learned was for the mashed potatoes and extra thin flood. I’m definitely a newbie when it comes to cookie decorating and I’m amazed at the speed in which I’m learning through graces teaching technique. I came back and purchased two other classes after my first and now am considering more. Thank you!
